BMW Motorrad has unveiled its latest innovation at the IAA Mobility 2025, the Vision CE concept, a futuristic electric scooter that aims to redefine safety and style in urban commuting. With a protective roll cage, seatbelt system, and self-balancing technology, BMW boldly claims the scooter removes the need for a helmet or the usual protective clothing.

Cage Meets Chic: A Helmet-Free Scooter

The Vision CE draws inspiration from the BMW C1, an early 2000s scooter that integrated a safety cell. Reviving that idea, BMW has equipped the Vision CE with a tubular metal cage combined with a custom seat and multi-point seatbelt system. This design intends to provide car-like protection on two wheels, offering riders more freedom without traditional gear.

Self-Balancing for Urban Ease

Embracing the realities of city traffic, BMW integrated self-balancing technology into the Vision CE. The scooter remains upright on its own when stationary. This is a practical feature for beginners or anyone seeking a seamless urban riding experience.

Futuristic Design

Visually, the Vision CE commands attention with its long wheelbase, matte white bodywork, black structural elements, and neon-red highlights. Coated aluminum accents and exposed engineering details give it a cyber-futuristic yet elegant aesthetic, blurring the line between scooter and design sculpture.

BMW describes the concept as a vehicle for “carefree, emotional riding in the city,” merging safety with a sense of freedom.

Built on Proven Electric Foundations

Rather than floating into the stratosphere, this concept is grounded in BMW’s successful CE electric scooter platform. The Vision CE shares lineage with the CE 04, launched in 2022. That model delivers around 42 hp, reaching 50 km/h in 2.6 seconds with a 130-km range, solid figures for daily urban use. While the added cage likely increases weight, BMW emphasizes the Vision CE’s role as a bold vision rather than an immediate production candidate.

BMW repeatedly states that these features “eliminate the need for a helmet,” but whether this holds true in real-world conditions remains to be seen. Some have pointed out the practical challenges of entering and exiting a roll-caged scooter, as well as whether laws would even allow helmet-free riding.

Still, concepts like the Vision CE often shape future production models. Even if the scooter itself doesn’t hit showrooms, its design ideas may influence the next generation of BMW’s electric mobility solutions.
