Yamaha has officially announced the transition of its YZR-M1 from the iconic inline-four engine to the V4 configuration for the 2026 MotoGP season. This announcement follows Yamaha’s previously stated intentions and highlights the brand’s commitment to transparent and continuous engine development.

For decades, the inline-four has been a defining part of Yamaha’s racing identity. It powered MotoGP icons like Valentino Rossi, Jorge Lorenzo, and Fabio Quartararo, earning Yamaha a long list of achievements. Across 429 Grands Prix, the inline-four delivered 125 race wins, over 350 podium finishes, and contributed to 8 Riders’ Titles, 7 Team Titles, 5 Manufacturer Titles, and 5 MotoGP Triple Crowns. Its combination of agility, smooth power delivery, and consistency made it one of the most successful engines in premier-class racing.

But as MotoGP evolves, so must the machines. Yamaha’s shift to a V4 configuration marks a bold new chapter aimed at meeting modern demands for acceleration, braking stability, and compatibility with the latest tyres and aero packages. The rapid development of the V4 throughout the 2025 season underscores Yamaha’s drive to stay at the cutting edge while respecting its heritage.
Today’s Valencian Grand Prix marks the final race for Yamaha’s iconic inline-four in MotoGP, a symbolic farewell to an engine that defined an era. Just two days later, all Yamaha MotoGP riders will debut the new V4 engine during the Valencia Test, officially ushering in a new era of performance, innovation, and excitement for Yamaha and its fans worldwide.
