KTM has become the first MotoGP manufacturer to showcase its upcoming 850cc engine, ahead of the sport’s major regulation changes set for 2027.

Starting in 2027, MotoGP will introduce a new technical package that reduces engine displacement from 1000cc to 850cc. All machines will run on 100% non-fossil fuels, with additional changes including reduced aerodynamics, the removal of ride height devices, and Pirelli becoming the series’ sole tire supplier.
KTM Leads the Way
While most manufacturers have remained quiet about their projects, KTM has released a short video on YouTube featuring the first dyno run of its new 850cc engine.
KTM Motorsport Director Pit Beirer confirmed the Austrian factory’s commitment to the new era:
“We have packed everything we have learned during the last years of MotoGP participation into this engine, and I am very confident that this piece of art will become a benchmark in the seasons to come from 2027.”
Beirer also noted that development is on schedule and that a complete prototype motorcycle will be operational soon.
From the released footage, the engine appears to retain a 90° V4 configuration, similar to KTM’s current RC16. However, specifications such as power output and weight remain undisclosed.
Under an agreement among manufacturers, on-track testing of the 2027 bikes will not begin until 2026. The rule aims to prevent excessive spending and ensure a level playing field, meaning initial development will primarily involve test riders rather than factory racers.
The Question
While KTM sounds confident about its future in MotoGP, its long-term position isn’t entirely clear. The company is still tied to a pending deal with Bajaj, which loaned KTM €450 million to avoid insolvency. As part of the agreement, Bajaj has until May 2026 to purchase a controlling 50.1% stake in KTM from Pierer Industrie AG.
For now, KTM remains under the leadership of former CEO Stefan Pierer (through current CEO Gottfried Neumeister). Whether Bajaj will maintain KTM’s strong commitment to MotoGP once they take full control is still uncertain.
Despite the financial backdrop, KTM’s early reveal shows they are determined to be at the forefront of MotoGP’s new era. With the countdown to 2027 underway, all eyes are now on how their rivals will respond.
